The naturalistic style in which he was trained provided a language for the expression of his remarkable power of observation in portraying both the living model and still life. The number of personal documents is very small, and official documentation relating to his paintings is relatively rare.
Though many copies of his portraits were evidently made in his studio by assistants, his own production was not large, and his surviving autograph works number fewer than 150. He was appointed court painter with a promise that no one else should portray the king. The visit did in fact have an important effect on his artistic evolution. He took up again his chief office of portrait painter and was occasionally called on to represent mythological subjects for the decoration of the royal apartments. From now on his religious works are rare and individual. Velázquez’s famous contribution to the series of military triumphs painted for the same throne room, is his only surviving historical subject. This time he was on official business as gentleman of the bedchamber. The royal ladies appear as doll-like figures, with their enormous coiffures and farthingale hoops. But in this late work there is no barrier between the world of myth and reality; they are united in an ingenious composition by formal and aerial perspective. His subjects were the king with his family and court and, characteristic for the age and parallel with the drama of the period, the common people.
A world-famous toymaker has created exquisite dancing dolls in his magic toyshop. The automata perform various dance routines for the prospective customers. They are upset that the two can-can dancers who are lovers are going to be separated, and a plot is hatched to hide them before the customers return in the morning. When the shop opens the next day and the customers come in to pick up their dolls, they discover that the can-can dancers are no longer there. The customers, not knowing about the secret life of the dolls, blame the shop owner and attack him and his assistant. It has been performed many times and is enduringly popular on record. All these dolls were only available for a short time. With eleven dolls and all the variations it could wind up taking a lifetime to get them all!
One reason could be if the original body had been damaged in some way, the heads usually went on in a similar way so it wouldn’t have been hard to swap them. Can you tell me anything about this doll?
As for the brownish appearance that’s different too unless she has just discoloured with age.
I could post her picture on the blog and we can see if any other collectors have any ideas too. Naomi recently started adding to her small collection of action figures.
